1. The Third Meeting of the WMCC on India-China Border talks held in New Delhi:
i. The Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on the India – China Border Affairs was held in New Delhi.
ii. This is the third meeting of WMCC which was held on 23 to 24 July 2013.
iii. Gautam Bambawale was leading the Indian Delegation who is the Joint Secretary (East Asia) with the representatives of the Ministries of External Affairs, Defence and Home Affairs and comprised the members of the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
iv. Ouyang Yujing, Director General, Department of Boundary and Oceanic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs was leading the Chinese Delegation with the representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and National Defence of the People’s Republic China.
v. The meeting was held with the purpose of building measures of development in both countries.
2. P Chidambaram introduced The National Skill Certification and Monetary reward scheme:
i. P Chidambaram, The Union Finance Minister on 16th Aug 2013 launched the National Skill Certification and Monetary Reward Scheme.
ii. This scheme will be implemented on pan-India basis in New Delhi. This scheme is the first such type of scheme launched in India.
iii. The main target of the scheme is youth to motivate them for acquiring vocational skills.
iv. Standard Training Assessment and Reward (STAR) is the brand of this scheme which meant for promotional purposes.
v. National Skill Development Corporation:
• It is a body which works under the Ministry of Finance.
• It is a public private partnership endeavor with 51% equity held by private sector and 49% by the Union Government.
• NSDC is formed in 2010 which is a professionally run for not-for-profit company that comprises 22 sectors skill councils and 87 training partners with over 2500 training centres spread across 352 districts in India.
3. Rafael Nadal is the winner of Men’s Singles Title in Rogers Cup 2013:
i. Rafael Nadal won his third Rogers Cup Title 2013 for Men’s Singles.
ii. He defeated Canada’s Milos Raonic 6-2 6-2 in the final of the Rogers Cup 2013 on 11th Aug 2013 held in Montreal.
iii. Rafael completed his 25th ATP World Tour Masters Title and bagged his eight tour-level trophy of the season.
iv. Rafael Nadal comes to the third position to the new ATP World ranking.
v. He became the first Canadian to be ranked in the top 10 of the ATP World tour.
4. For the first time Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system is going to be used in Nagaland by Polls:
i. For the first time the Election Commission of India has decided to use the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) by poll in Nagaland.
ii. The VVPAT system would be used in the 4th September 2013 to the Noksen Assembly constituency in Nagaland.
iii. This pilot project will be supervised by Chief Election Commissioner V. S. Sampath.
iv. Government of India on 14th Aug 2013 amended the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 to allow the use of VVPAT.
v. Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail System (VVPAT):
• It is an initiative of the EC to ensure free and fair elections.
• This system enables the voters to take printout of their ballot-displaying the name, election symbol and serial number they have chosen, but the electors can’t take the printout home.
5. D. Bala Venkatesh appointed the new Ambassador to UN Conference on Disarmament:
i. D. Bala Venkatesh Varma on 26th July 2013 is the new Ambassador to UN Conference on Disarmament, Geneva. D. Bala Venkatesh Varma is a 1988 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer who was appointed as a Permanent Representative of India to the UN Conference.
ii. He was conferred with the first S K Singh Award by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for his extra-ordinary efforts in the Indian Foreign Service on 6th January 2012 during the Indo-US Nuclear deal.
iii. D. Bala Venkatesh is an experienced person in nuclear matters.
iv. He has worked in the Prime Minister’s Office and India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva.
6. The Biggest travel trade show of India, The Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF) 2013 started off in Ahmadabad:
i. The Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF) 2013 which is the biggest travel trade show of India started off on 16th Aug 2013 in Ahmadabad. 26 States across India and six Countries participated in the event.
ii. Gujarat Tourism Minister Saurabh Patel inaugurated the TTF 2013 which is the three day event.
iii. The TTF 2013 is organized by Fairest Media Limited.
iv. Thailand, Malaysia, UAE, Maldives, Turkey and Nepal are the participating countries of the fair.
v. Travel Trade Fair 2013:
• This is the leading travel trade show in India which started off in 1989 year.
• It covers nine tourism markets in India which comprise New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Surat, Ahmadabad, Surat, Chennai, Kolkata and Pune.
7. Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Bomb Expert Abdul Karim Tunda arrested by Delhi Police:
i. Abdul Karim Tunda was arrested by the Delhi Police on 16th Aug 2013 from Indo-Nepal border.
ii. He was one of India’s 20 most wanted terrorists who is a 70 year old bomb expert of Lashkar-e-Taiba.
iii. A special cell of Delhi Police which produced in a Delhi Court arrest this terrorist from Indo-Nepal border.
iv. He is one of the terrorist of Pakistan’s ISI who was responsible for terrorist activities in the eighties.
v. He was trained in making of explosive devices and bombs which can be very destructive.
8. The street leads to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, in Canada named after Mahatma Gandhi:
i. A part of the York Avenue which leads to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, Capital of Manitoba Province, Canada named at the Name of Honorary Mahatma Gandhi.
ii. The street was named on 15th Aug 2013 as the Honorary Mahatma Gandhi Way.
iii. This street named so on the occasion of the 67th Independence Day of India.
iv. The Mayor, Winnipeg Sam Katz clarified that the street was named so for the struggle for Human Rights of an individual who is synonymous with Mahatma Gandhi.
v. Mahatma Gandhi was the symbolic figure who struggle for human rights so the street leads to the Museum for Human Rights named as the Honorary Mahatma Gandhi Way.
