National Affairs
• To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Assamese literature pioneer Lakshminath Bezbaruah, India’s capital Delhi will celebrate to pay homage to the great literature pioneer. The national commemoration will start in Delhi on December with a sarod recital by Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan and a performance by Bollywood singer Angaraag Papon Mahanta and the Khan Brothers. The celebration will include the presence of veteran bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore and bollywood filmmaker Jahnu Barua. The function which includes projects on learning of Assamese language, cultures and history of Assam and events will be undertaken by the Ministry of Culture and Assam Association, Delhi (AAD).
• Royal couple Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles are on nine day tour in India. They have visited Rishikesh, Mumbai and now will be on four-day visit of Kerala.
• India's Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi and Premier of New South Wales Barry O'Farrell jointly inaugurated the 7th annual Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Sydney, Australia. The 2013 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas therefore will remain dedicated to link the vast Indian Diaspora and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region with India.
• Punjab state health department has announced Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Beema Yojna (BPSSBY), a cashless health care scheme for BPL families in Punjab. The scheme launched by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would provide free medical services of up to Rs 30,000 per annum to a five-member Below Poverty Line (BPL) family for hospitalisations. A plan was prepared to upgrade health infrastructure in the state and priority has been laid on cancer treatment. The government has spent Rs 350 crore on this health scheme.
Awards and Honours
• The newly released first edition of the annual ‘Sikh 100’ has ranked Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the most powerful Sikh, usurping the Indian Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and even beating Journalist and Novelist Khushwant Singh into 22nd position.
‘Sikh 100’ is a survey conducted by London based Sikh community to honour most powerful, influential and contemporary Sikh. The survey also appreciates voting from all over the world through a website. The first edition was published from London.
The annual list saw a number of politicians, regional head, judges including Gursharan Kaur, wife of current Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who ranked first in this list.
Sports
• India’s 24-year-old Heena Sidhu created history in Munich, by winning the gold medal in 10m air pistol event in International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup finals for India. At the world stage, it’s her first gold medal. She smashed double Olympic Champion Chinese Guo Wenjun, world champion Serbian Arunovic Zorana and Olympic medallist Ukrainian Olena Kostevych in finals.
A woman shooter and dentist from Patiala Sindhu became first pistol ace from India to win a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup.
It’s worth mentioning that she is the first Indian pistol shooter to grab a silver medal in 2009 World Cup in Beijing, China. Also she has become third Indian to gold medals in the ISSF World Cup. Anjali Bhagwat and Gagan Narang had earlier won gold medals in the ISSF World Cup in small bore rifle shooting in 2002 and 2008 respectively.
• Stellar performer India's Ravichandran Ashwin is the highest-ranked Indian all-rounder in the latest issued Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test. The new debutants in this list include middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Mohammed Shami. Rohit Sharma was on 63rd place while Shami entered with 53rd place.
• India secured fifth place in the third Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament held in Japan.
Akashdeep Singh attained three goals as Oman smashed by India with a score of 6-1.
Pakistan clinched the winner title by defeating host nation Japan with a score of 3-1 while Japan women snatched the golden medal by beating India.
Books
• Last year published book “I am Malala”, an autobiography of Teen Pakistani activist Malala Yousufzai have been banned by some private schools in Pakistan.
The memoir which was co-written with British journalist Christina Lamb reveals how she was shot at by Taliban and her new life in Britain.
The All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association officials banned her book stating that she and her thoughts belong to west. Her controversial thoughts are against Islam.
Economy and Finance
• India's trade deficit rose and stood at $10.55 billion in October. In October, India’s merchandise exports were valued at $27.27 billion, increasing 13.4 per cent from $24.03 billion in comparison to the same month last year, and imports were valued at $37.82 billion, growth of 14.50 per cent from October 2012’s $44.24 billion, according to the country’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
