International Affairs
• At least three people were killed on Friday as a fierce typhoon Haiyan hit central Philippines, causing mass disruption. Meteorologists state that this is world’s strongest storm of the year 2013. The typhoon sustained winds of 315 kph (195 mph) and gusts were as strong as 380 kph (235 mph). Due to the typhoon, more than 1, 00,000 people took shelter in different migration centres.
• Saudi Arabia is soon going to be replaced by Jordan on the UN Security Council seat. Reason behind this replacement as Saudi Arabia has rejected the position in protest at UN's failure to end the Syria war. It’s worth mentioning here that last month UN General Assembly had elected Saudi Arabia for a two-year term to the Security Council.
• United States and Israel has lost their voting right at UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) an agency of the United Nations which protects the cultures of the world via its Heritage sites.
As per UNESCO set of laws, US missed a critical deadline to repay its debt to UNESCO and automatically lost its voting rights. Israel also didn’t pay its dues at the same time and was ousted from UNESCO voting right.
National Affairs
• 33rd edition of the India International Trade Fair is going to commence from November 14 in New Delhi. The theme of this 14 day long trade fair is inclusive growth.
• National conference on intellectual disability was held in Secunderabad .
Kumari Selja, Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment inaugurated this national conference.
• As many as five pacts were signed between India and Kuwait to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The countries made agreement in the areas of culture, education, investment, trade and security, and joint ventures in the energy sector. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh discussed the agreement during the visit of Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah here in India.
Awards and Honours
• For the third consecutive year, ICICI Bank MD and CEO Chanda Kochhar has topped as the most powerful businesswoman in India by Fortune Magazine. Fortune India had issued the list of India's ‘50 Most Powerful Women in Business’.
The other women who made their place in the top 10 include Shikha Sharma of Axis Bank and Aruna Jayanthi of Capgemini; Preetha Reddy, Managing Director of Apollo Hospital Enterprises; Mallika Srinivasan, CEO of Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE); Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson, HT Media; Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and MD, Biocon; Vinita Bali, MD, Britannia Industries and Naina Lal Kidwai, Country Head, HSBC India.
• Martha Dodray, an Indian polio worker has been conferred an honour with a prestigious UN Foundation award for her incessant effort in saving children from polio disease. Dodray, who belongs to Darbhanga, Bihar has been honoured at the Global Leadership Awards Dinner 2013 in New York,USA. The function was hosted by the UN Foundation and the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA). Another achievement for Martha is that she shared stage with Pakistan girls’ education activist Malala Yousafzai.
• The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has selected an Indian-American doctor Rahul Jindal for the 2013 Outstanding American by Choice Award.
According to USCIS, the Outstanding American by Choice award identifies the outstanding achievements of naturalized U.S. citizens. Renowned transplant surgeon and philanthropist, Rahul Jindal will be awarded for his valuable contribution to the US health sector in Virginia on November 13.
• To commemorate the 100 years of Indian Cinema, the Ministry for Information & Broadcasting has come up with a special new award called the Centenary award.
The award will be given every year to an eminent Indian film personality as an honor for their contribution to Indian Cinema.
Books
• Indian Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari released a book on nuclear energy. The book entitled India’s Nuclear Energy Programme: Future Plans, Prospects and Concerns was edited by Prof. R. Rajaraman.
